The students above are very into their activity. It looks like they are simply playing the popular board game, Jenga, but they are actually practicing their multiplication facts at the same time! I took the Jenga game and wrote a multiplication or division expression on each piece. As the student pulls the piece, before putting it on top, the student must find the product or quotient. Flashcards have their place, however practice like this can make it a little bit more fun! The 4th graders above are practicing facts they know - or facts that they have strategies to evaluate - but it can also be used for students just learning. The third grade students below used a multiplication table to help them find the answers. As they become more fluent with their facts, we will gradually reduce the use of the table. The next time that you are wondering what to do with your child on a Saturday afternoon - consider holding a Family Math Jenga Tournament!
