As adults, we use math all the time. We don't even really think about it, we just do it. The speed limit sign says 50 mph - that means something to the driver. We often go to the grocery store on a budget - that means something to the shopper. A sweater is on sale - that means something to our credit card!
As you go throughout your day, take a few minutes to talk to your child about the math that you are using. Point out the speed limit signs and talk about what "miles per hour" means. Ask your child to guess the total in the shopping cart. Figure out the sale price of that sweater in your head, and then tell your child how you did it. These kinds of converstaions help your child make connections between the math that she is learning in school and the math that is all around us in our daily life. Have a wonderful Holiday! |
